Strombergs keeps his head to win BMX gold

(BEIJING, August 22) -- Maris Strombergs of Latvia kept a cool head in a heated Men's race to carve a narrow victory as BMX made its Olympic debut on Friday, August 22.

Strombergs grabbed the decisive lead in the first corner and rode with smooth confidence to win the gold medal as rivals crashed in his wake.

Americans Mike Day and Donny Robinson each avoided a costly spill in the second turn to win silver and bronze, respectively, in the eight-man final.

Strombergs, the reigning world champion, was fastest in the three runs that make up the semifinals to secure the preferred inside gate start position. With Friday's achievement, he notched Latvia's first gold medal of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Day won his semifinals heat, but could not get around Strombergs in the final despite a strong effort in the first turn.

Robinson overcame a poor outside-lane start position, earned after crashing in the final of the three semifinal runs, to claim bronze, thanks to his excellent bike handling skills.

Sifiso Nhlapo of South Africa, who had not crashed in two days of qualifying, slipped out in the second corner, taking Damien Godet of France and Australia's Jared Graves with him.

Jamaica's "Lightning" Bolt strikes again

By Andrew Cawthorne

BEIJING (Reuters) - Jamaica's Usain "Lightning" Bolt roared to gold in the 200 metres on Wednesday to become the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to win an Olympic sprint double.

Bolt, whose father says owes his speed and power to the island's local yam vegetable, charged to a world record time of 19.30 seconds, falling to the floor in joy at the end.

"I'm Number One," he mouthed at TV cameras, beating his chest and blowing kisses at the 91,000 crowd in the Bird's Nest.

Bolt had won the 100m at the showcase Olympic stadium in swashbuckling style at the weekend, also setting a world record.

This time, he again joked on his way to the block, firing an imaginary arrow in the air, but looked deadly serious as he opened up a big gap and steamed through the finishing line to beat Michael Johnson's 1996 record by two hundredths of a second.

"I knew the track was a fast track but I didn't think this was possible. I'm shocked," Bolt said afterwards.

Johnson dubbed Bolt "Superman 2" during commentary for the BBC. "I looked at his start and just went, 'Wow'. Guys that tall should not be able to start like that," he said.

Competitors were awe-struck. "It's a brutal ass-whipping we took," said Kim Collins, of St Kitts and Nevis, who was seventh.

Guo Jingjing Is The Golden in olympic 2008
(Guo Jingjing)
"Diving Queen"

Guo Jingjing began her diving career a little late for an élite Chinese athlete: age 6. She managed to catch up, making her Olympic debut as a 14-year-old in Atlanta and winning two springboard golds in Athens. But Guo, now 26, and the other Chinese divers may have more catching up to do. In May she didn't even make the finals of a springboard event. It could be pre-Olympic jitters for one of a fleet of divers expected to sweep the medals. Maybe it's those outsize expectations that have made Guo a bit of a contrarian. When she dared spend time on endorsements after her Athens double, she was reprimanded by sports bureaucrats. And after she dismissed Canadian challenger Blythe Hartley as a "fatty," her coach had to apologize. "Guo Jingjing is just a child," he said. "She can't express herself perfectly." Except perhaps on a diving board.

(BEIJING, August 3) -- Men's 100m world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica got the green light from his coach to compete in both the 100m and 200m events at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The 21-year-old sprinter has won nine out of ten races in the 100m and 200m competitions this year.

In the 100m, Bolt clocked 9.72 to break the world record in New York this May. He has the two quickest performances of the year under his belt.

Bolt's accomplishments don't stop there. In the 200m, Bolt has recorded the three fastest times of this year, culminating in his 19.67-second performance in Athens three weeks ago.

The double dash Olympic gold is one of the most coveted prizes of the Games. Many have tried, but few have been able to accomplish the feat.

Carl Lewis was the last to win the Olympic double gold 24 years ago in Los Angeles.
